I'm thinking of starting up a club at UNBC this semester dedicated to historical longsword fencing in the German (Liechtenauer) style. What we're doing would probably be closest to cut and thrust rapier, but since that doesn't seem to be a possibility up here, we'll be just a study group. We will mostly be sourcing from translations of Sigmund Ringeck's manuscript.
Would anyone be interested in supporting or participating?

I Have a copy of a book from Paladin Press that shows Sigmunds work (Strangely they try and sell it everywhere for over 100$ I got it for about 35$ I think.... anyhow I also Have two Cold Steel Longsword (Bokken as they refer to them which is bunk cuz they are not wooden they are a polymer resin)
Depending on the Costs (both in Finances, and Time comitments as well as Saftey Equipment required) I would be intrested myself, and again pending the for mentioned things Possibly 2 friends that would.
:-)
Of course your welcome to take a look at the book, but you likely already have seen it. I also Have some on the Use of a Scottish Dirk in combat.
Additionally I have two Videos By Hank Reinhardt (Arguably one of the best swordsmen and passer of European Combat Knowledge of recent histroy)
"The Myth of the Sword" And "Viking Sword" How to use the Viking sword in real combat
Currently I have been focusing on Bullwhip combat, but if there is a sword group using REAL techniques... I would be intrested to say the least.

Excellent! I currently have two books: Sigmund Ringeck's Knightly Art of the Longsword (I think that's the same book that you have), and Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship, both containing separate translations of Ringeck. I also have Alex Kiermayer's DVD The Longsword of Johannes Liechtenauer. By polymer resin, do you mean the black polypropylene ones, or are they something else? Currently, I own 1 steel blunt, a mask, a gorget, and 2 pairs of gloves, and have 2 purple heart armoury gen 3 nylon longsword simulators on order. NUGSS requires 20 interested members to form an official club, and obviously I don't have enough equipment to accomodate 20 at the moment, and funds are extremely limited to new clubs. My current plan is to order a few cheap wasters so everyone can have something to hold. Depending on how many people are interested, I am thinking of holding practices twice a week, where people may go to just one, to make the most out of limited equipment, if people outnumber equipment. I have not decided what sort of club fees or fundraising to impose yet, but I would like to keep the barrier to entry as low as possible. In terms of safety equipment requirements, it would be very impractical to require full protective gear for everyone. So I'm thinking of having multiple levels of requirement depending on the activity. Perhaps something like: Slow non contact drilling: gloves recommended Faster drilling: mask and lacrosse gloves required, gorget recommended Slow free play: mask, lacrosse gloves, gorget required, cup for men, chest protector for women, joint protection recommended Faster free play: gambeson, rigid hand and arm and joint protection, helmet or mask with back of the head protection... We probably won't get to bouting at speed for a while due to skill levels, and limited gear expense, but another possibility might be padded weapons.. In all cases, there will be emphasis on control of weapon. Flailing due to too fast of a tempo will be discouraged, and is probably counter productive anyways. I know at least one person who would also be interested in the scottish combat methods including the two handed claymore. I myself know next to nothing on this topic however. What days are you available? Do you live near UNBC? Let's meet up some time! Bullwhip combat.. I never even knew that existed! awesomeness.
